Tierra Libre Celebrates Six Weeks of Autonomy and Resistance

Day #42

TIERRA LIBRE - Today marks six weeks since a group of courageous land defenders stood in front of a bulldozer to prevent the death of an ancient, sacred Grandmother cottonwood tree, later scurrying up into its branches to establish a tree sit.

With that act, Tierra Libre was created.  For the past six weeks, land defenders have been occupying the tree sit, preventing further border wall construction across the San Rafael Valley, resisting incursions of Border Patrol and other law enforcement, and establishing an autonomous commune where people can eat, work, sleep, make  decisions directly, and live free lives together.

The zone we have created together offers hospitality, asylum, and welcome to all, regardless of citizenship status in neighboring states. Residents, visitors, and supporters of Tierra Libre come from a variety of backgrounds, and are choosing to build a life together in deep harmony with this land, innovate new ways of living and being together, and combining our diverse ancestral traditions to form a new lifeway together.

By creating a territory free from the colonial notions of private property and centralized authority and control, Tierra Libre has also tangibly and politically declared solidarity with the Indigenous lifeways that were once the norm across this land.

Each morning at Tierra Libre begins with a Sunrise Ceremony to greet the sun as it rises in the east and stand together in prayer and meditation and collective grounding in the source of all life. Days at camp are filled with play, music, ceremony, collective work, meetings to coordinate the day’s responsibilities, eating together, and resisting incursions by repressive forces that would seek to end this experiment in joyful, collective autonomy.

Tierra Libre recognizes the legitimacy of no nation-state—neither US, nor Mexico—and declares itself free of external impositions of law, state violence, and coercion. Norms and their enforcement are collectively determined by camp participants and the responsibility to hold one another accountable to those norms is held collectively.

Everyone disillusioned with battling for crumbs in a crumbling economy and living at the whim of tyrants thousands of miles away are welcome to join. Tierra Libre is open to all. Everyday camp infrastructure improves as more and more people arrive to help, bringing new talents, skills, and resources with them. Residents here include engineers, musicians, healthcare workers, lawyers, spiritual leaders, construction workers, farmers, and poets. Warriors and healers, free spirits seeking a new way to live.

This announcement is an invitation. If you want to help build this experiment, come to the San Rafael Valley. Join Tierra Libre.

Únete a Tierra Libre.

In this floating world with its cargo of brutality, there are many things that want to be said. Living & Fighting will say a few of them. It is a necessarily rude gesture in cyberspace, hopefully exceeding it. This excess is our desire and its refusal to settle into an automatic life.
