The following dispatch was written by forest defenders camping in and near Grandmother, the last ancient cottonwood along the border in the San Rafael Valley near Lochiel, Arizona. It was anonymously submitted to L&F and is published below in Spanish and English.

Day #22
LOCHIEL, Arizona/LA NORIA, Mexico - This morning, on our fourth day of sunrise ceremony, our conflict with the border regime achieved a new height. As the sun began to peak over the horizon, we found ourselves again in the "border" easement road—that small expanse between the base of a sacred grandmother cottonwood and the open wound being driven across this land. We stood in prayer holding a banner, which read "Friends Across Borders" as the first work truck came to a stop in front of us. One truck became many, lined up on either side of our ceremony, as the minutes passed and the sun's light embraced us.
We were each welcomed and encouraged to make a prayer for ourselves, a prayer for each other, and a prayer for the earth. All the while, the workers and private security idled about, powerless to interrupt the ceremony. Only the occasional impotent plea to ask us when we would be done punctuated the rhythms of ritual time.
Eventually, one group of comrades brought the banner down the easement and draped it across the remains of one of the felled grandmother cottonwood trees: a ritual renewal of our commitment to hold ourselves in conflict with the terror regime that seeks to subjugate and annihilate all life on earth.
Soon after, once the minutes had grown past an hour and a half, the work trucks began to back up, turn around, and drive off over either horizon. They did not return for over two hours.
Since before the first treesit, from each encuentro to the songs of the original stewards of these lands, our actions have continued to determine space and time. Today, many prayers, a few songs, and a dance was all it took to experience a life without borders.
We will continue our prayers for as long as it takes to turn this imaginary border into a distant memory. We are calling all to pray with us. We are calling all to act with us.
This empire is more fragile than we could have imagined. Come, dance, sing, and pray while we topple it together.

LOCHIEL, Arizona/LA NORIA, Mexico - Esta mañana, en nuestro cuarto día de la ceremonia del amanecer, nuestro conflicto con el régimen fronterizo alcanzó nuevas alturas. A medida que el sol comenzaba a asomar por el horizonte, nos encontramos nuevamente en el camino de acceso de la «frontera» —esa pequeña franja entre la base de un álamo sagrado y la herida abierta que se abre paso a través de esta tierra—. Nos mantuvimos de pie en oración sosteniendo una pancarta que decía «Amigos más allá de las fronteras» cuando la primera camioneta de trabajo se detuvo frente a nosotros. Un camión se convirtió en muchos, alineados a ambos lados de nuestra ceremonia, mientras pasaban los minutos y la luz del sol nos envolvía.
A cada uno de nosotros se nos dio la bienvenida y se nos animó a hacer una oración por nosotros mismos, una oración por los demás y una oración por la tierra. Mientras tanto, los trabajadores y los guardias de seguridad privada holgazaneaban, sin poder para interrumpir la ceremonia. Solo alguna que otra suplicación impotente para preguntarnos cuándo terminaríamos interrumpía el ritmo del tiempo ritual.
Finalmente, un grupo de compañeros bajó la pancarta por la calle de acceso y la colocó sobre los restos de uno de los álamos abuelitos talados: una ritual de renovación de nuestro compromiso de mantenernos en conflicto con el régimen de terror que busca subyugar y aniquilar toda la vida en la Tierra.
Poco después, cuando ya había pasado más de una hora y media, las camionetas de trabajo comenzaron a dar marcha atrás, dar la vuelta y alejarse hacia cualquiera de los dos horizontes. No regresaron hasta más de dos horas después.
Desde antes de la primera ocupación de árboles, desde cada encuentro hasta los cantos de los guardianes originales de estas tierras, nuestras acciones han seguido definiendo el espacio y el tiempo. Hoy, bastaron muchas oraciones, algunas canciones y un baile para experimentar una vida sin fronteras.
Seguiremos con nuestras oraciones todo el tiempo que sea necesario para convertir esta frontera imaginaria en un recuerdo lejano. Llamamos a todos a orar con nosotros. Llamamos a todos a actuar con nosotros.
Este imperio es más frágil de lo que podríamos haber imaginado. Ven, baila, canta y ora mientras lo derribamos juntos.
