The following dispatch was written by forest defenders camping in and near Grandmother, the last ancient cottonwood along the border in the San Rafael Valley near Lochiel, Arizona. It was anonymously submitted to L&F and is published below in Spanish and English.
On August 14, a small group of land defenders completely stalled the construction of the violent knife that is the border wall. Fisher Sand and Gravel ended their workday after land defenders took the border road for over 2 hours to protect Grandmother Tree, a more than 200 year old Cotton Wood still standing within the zone of destruction, and her sitter - always in her canopy - from machine encroachment.
Defenders asserted their place to pray for and defend all living beings' inherent right to freedom of movement and life. Defenders held a ceremony under Grandmother Tree as violent vibrations from the heavy machinery shook the ground, putting stress on Grandmother Tree’s extensive root system, endangering her sitter and animal inhabiters.
The ceremony was interrupted multiple times by Paul from Vision Quest, a private security firm, who began filming and yelling. When defenders demanded respect for their ceremony, he declared the ceremony was on public land and therefore not entitled to privacy.
After unsuccessuly intimidating those in prayer, Paul threatened to call the Sheriff’s Department. As heavy machinery advanced toward the people on the ground, a small group stood directly in the path and blocked machines from further movement.
Paul escalated intimidation by filming in people's faces, calling the sheriff, threatening arrest, and full body shoving.
Santa Cruz County Deputy Alejandra E. Estrada (badge #209) approached the site on foot 45 minutes after Paul's initial call. The deputy attempted to speak to defenders as they stood silent and devoted around Grandmother Tree.
No arrests were made. Grandmother, her sitter, and land defenders are on the ground to fight another day.
“Today, we decided that the conflict at the border will be led by those who seize the initiative. We will not wait for colonial powers to make the first move. Under the yellowing leaves of Grandmother, we fought off the forces of the US empire. Come join our fight here and everywhere. Fight and win!”

El siguiente comunicado fue escrito por defensores del bosque que acampan en Grandmother y sus alrededores, el último álamo antiguo que queda a lo largo de la frontera en el valle de San Rafael, cerca de Lochiel, Arizona. Fue enviado de forma anónima a L&F y se publica a continuación en español e inglés.
El 14 de agosto, un pequeño grupo de defensores detuvo completamente la construcción del cuchillo violento que es el muro fronterizo. La empresa constructora, Fisher Sand and Gravel, terminó su jornada laboral después de que los defensores tomaran la carretera fronteriza durante más de 2 horas para proteger a la Abuela árbol, un Álamo gigante de más de doscientos años de antigüedad que resiste en pie adentro de la zona de destrucción, y a su protector quien se encuentra siempre en su copa, ante la incursión de las máquinas.
Los defensores afirmaron su lugar para orar y defender el derecho inherente de todos los seres vivos a la libertad de movimiento y de vida. Los defensores llevaron a cabo una ceremonia bajo la Abuela árbol mientras las vibraciones violentas de la pesada maquinaria sacudieron el suelo, poniendo estrés en el extenso sistema de raíces del gran Álamo y poniendo en peligro a su protector y a los anímales que lo habitan.
La ceremonia fue interrumpida varias veces por Paul de Vision Quest, una compañía de seguridad privada, que comenzó a grabar y gritar. Cuando los defensores exigieron respeto por su ceremonia, Paul declaró que la ceremonia era en terreno público y, por lo tanto, no tenía derecho a la privacidad.

No se realizaron detenciones. La Abuela árbol, su protector y los defensores siguen en pie para luchar otro día.
“Hoy decidimos que el conflicto en la frontera será liderado por los que toman iniciativa. No esperaremos a que las potencias coloniales den el primer paso. Bajo la protection de la Abuela luchamos contra las fuerzas del imperio estadounidense. Ven y únase a nuestra lucha aquí y en todas partes. ¡Lucha y gana!”
